In our area, we had Helm's Bakery trucks, with long shallow trays that slid out of the back of the truck -- full of fresh, delectable breads, donuts, and other goodies. I loved it when my mom would let me go out to buy the breads we needed because she let me get a donut.
Ah yes, Dugan's. They delivered in Newburgh NY back in the late 1940's, and their door-to-door baked goods delivery competition there was Cushman's and Krug's.
As a kid, in the 1940s, I spent all of my summers and holidays with my family in Long Beach, L.I., where we all enjoyed Dugan's delivered baked goods. I especially liked their pies; Dutch Apple seemed to be a family favorite. I was sad when Dugan's went out of business, but happy to recognize their distinctive truck at this website. In those simpler days, services to the home were very welcome and now represent fond memories. (Remember Good Humor bells on those pedal- driven cooler boxes?)
Wow, Dugan's! One of the good memories of my childhood. Even though there was little money in our house, my Mother must have been taken by the friendly delivery man and his gentle sales' style. Those delicious whole wheat, blueberry muffins were such a big treat for us kids. This was Suffolk County, Long Island 1960.
