The original Motel 6 is still there in Santa Barbara, CA, and is the most expensive one in the chain -- about $360 weekday/$480 weekend nights in the summer. On the plus side, it's less than 500 feet from the beach.

I was trying to remember when Motel 6 (and the others, Motel 8, etc) actually charged that amount for a room. Thanks for filling that in (1962). I wonder how long they tried to hold out before raising the price?
