People who took extended cruises would bring these monster trunks with entire
wardrobes, since one couldn't wear the same thing to dinner twice, could one?

The only frame of reference I have for a steamer trunk is an episode of "I Love Lucy" where she got stuck in one - something to do with her needing verification of her birth so she could get a passport.  :)
