At the hospital where mine were born, when you got off the elevator on the 4th floor (maternity ward) to left was an alcove with a sofa, chairs, and ash trays
When my first was born, I was in such a rush I left my cigarettes at home. An orderly (back then Nurses were female and males could only be an orderly) when to a bar across the street and got me a pack. Now you can get in trouble for smoking in your car in the parking lot.

Dunno... I thought babies were too young to smoke cigars. :)

Expectant fathers, stereotypically, would chain smoke while pacing back and forth outside the delivery room, and hand out cigars to announce the new arrival. Since the gender of the baby wasn't known until its birth, did they have to a both "It's a boy!" and "It's a girl!" varieties stashed away?
