These drills and the Saturday morning air raid whistle have haunted me throughout my life.I was convinced...we would all be gone in the near future.

never understood the thinking there-also don't stand near a window in the hallway=didn't they see the 'after' photos from hiroshima??

Right! As if...
The joke was that if you crouch with your head well buried between your legs you'd be able to kiss your ass goodbye.

I remember only one such drill. It was in 1959 and I was in kindergarten. We crouched facing the wall in an inside hall. They didn't tell us why and I didn't wonder. We did all kinds of stuff in school that made no sense and this was no exception.
