Late 50's & early 60's (age 8-12) trick or treat didn't start until it got dark (about 6:30). We'd head out by ourselves or with some friends (no parents), fill up, go home and change costumes and head out a gain.
The only day of the year when didn't have to be home when the streetlights came on.

@dtdavis2012 - At least the pennies were better than a bruised apple or homemade popcorn ball wrapped in waxpaper. Back then you could still buy some decent candy with a few pennies.

One thing I always hated back then (early 1960's) was getting pennies thrown into my trick or treat bag.  If it wasn't edible, I didn't want it!!

The only costume I remember was some kind of medieval princess that my mom made. It was pale yellow with long billowing sleeves and a black velvet-like vest with braided gold trim.

Nowadays, it's for the grownups, too. But even the kids' costumes are more sexy than spooky or scary.

Personally, I'm not quite sure what I'm gonna be, but I've got this nice chain-mail hoodie... (BTW, the only Halloween costume I actually remember wearing as a kid -- from age 6 to maybe 11 -- was that of a spaceman.)
