In the 50's and early 60's we had a "Voice Activated " remote for the the TV. Dad would say, "change the channel" or "turn it up" and one of us kids would get up and do it.
I recall that one of my friends had a TV with a remote - but the remote was wired. The wire was sometimes a tripping hazard, but the advantage was you couldn't lose the remote!
In the 60's my cousin had an early remote control -- two buttons: on/off, channel advance. It actually rang a tone, and the TV Dial physically advanced via servo motor.
