Interestingly, I have heard that the majority of people who heard the debate on radio thought Nixon got the better of JFK, but that JFK dominated opinions of those who saw it on the tube.

If you have never viewed this, visit the JFK Library in Boston and watch it. JFK really made Nixon look horrible.
