My older sister took a course called "Speedwriting" - somehow a better version of shorthand. The school gave you 3 or 4 of these gray cover books explaining and illustrating their unique handwriting system.
She graduated top of the class so proficient at it they used her picture and bio in national advertising! This was in the 1950's.
