GlenEllyn - Have you thought about using cinder blocks in a stairstep fashion (2 blocks with 1 centered on top or a 3-2-1 if need to go higher)? Then paint or cover the blocks in some decorative way. On the steps formed by the bocks you can place flower pots, decorative urns, etc.
Just a thought/suggestion. laughing

I'd like to have one of these, although in my current home they might not work out since I have 9-foot ceilings.

Have a nice one in my reading room , still in use. They're still available on eBay if you're of a mind to own one (or more). My first one from the 60's wound up with scorched fiberglas shades cracking due to overwattage bulbs, my fault.

Had a pole lamp at the head of my bed for years and also forgot about it until seeing this. Preferred keeping the lamps in the "up" position as it diffused the light by bouncing it off the ceiling (a trick learned from our 1950's Polaroid-Land camera "bounce flash" instruction booklet). Got an unpleasant pole lamp lesson one night when the tension in the top lamp fixture suddenly loosened and fell into the downward position. Out poured hundreds of dried out, dead mosquitoes!

When I moved to an apartment that had higher ceilings...used a cinder block as a base.

My sister had one. She was moving and setting it back up. She pulled the top portion with the spring to get it in place. Her fingers slipped and the spring shot right through the ceiling! lol lol lol

I had one in my apartment in NYC in the late 1960's.

Lol! We had one quite similar when I was very young. I forgot about it until I just saw this one!

I had one, but it was broken during my move from NYC to California in the mid-'70s.

Oh, God! My parents let me have theirs when they were going to throw it out. It worked until the mid- 90s when I finally got rid of it!
