Bought my first CD player in 1986, turned it on, pushed play, waited for scratching noises, heard nothing, increased volume, then BOOM out came the music ; jumped about a foot ... took awhile before CD quality evened out but I did retire my Bang & Olufsen Beogram 3000 turntable because I never liked vinyl records ; too delicate.
You could buy a new album ($4 or more) clean it properly to remove shavings or whatever, and have clicks and pops the first time even with an expensive turntable like mine.

The CD is a great invention, but there's something neat and satisfying watching a phonograph record spin around while the tonearm's stylus tracks the groove. You can cue the record anywhere on the disc by simply dropping the tonearm where you want it, which is why disc jockeys still use them. To many audiophiles, analog records have a warmer, more pleasant sound to them than CD's.
