Chuck, VCRs didn't arrive on the home entertainment market until the mid- to late-1970s, somewhat outside the focus of this web site. Similarly for the TRS-80 and Apple II. Check out the "Life Before" gallery, though.
Speaking of red rocket ship crystal radios with an alligator clip...a fellow grammar school classmate in Fort Lee NJ (ca '57 - mebbe '59) had one...showed it to us at recess...(rememnber recess??? MAN!!! Was I disappointed when I found out there was no recess in HS!!!)...he clipp the alligator to one of the metal studs on a telephone pole and we actually HEARD something!!!
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I've added the Muntz Stereo-Pak 4-track tape system to the Home Entertainment gallery, and the Rocket crystal radio to the Toys & Games gallery.

I had a little red rocket crystal radio but it was tuned by twisting the nose. It had an alligator clip for an antenna connection, which picked up the strongest signal when it was clipped to the dial stop on our telephone.
I experimented with a few crystal sets but without amplification, the only station any of them could pick up was WCAU Philadelphia 1010am. It had a 50kW transmitter which just overwhelmed any other signal that was floating on the ether. I made a "wave trap" antenna once but it started to smoke before I could properly test it.
yes 4 track tapes. there were even small roller adaptors to snap in the 4 track tapes tp be able to play them ina 8 track machine. First machines i remember were masde my MUNTZ
