Known as Aji-No-Moto in Asia. The company is based in Japan but it's popular all over Asia and other parts of the world. Andy Williams went to Japan to do a big radio and TV promo some 30-40 years ago.
That Food Detectives show was inaccurate, because they claimed that half of the diners did not eat any (added) MSG -- but other common ingredients in Chinese food, such as soy sauce, contain MSG created as a byproduct of fermentation and/or processing. So, the people who were complaining of symptoms, actually ate MSG.
Food Network once ran a show called Food Detectives hosted bt Ted Allen that showed that 'Chinese Restaurant Syndrome' is likely a myth, based on the power of suggestion. The Scientist on the show says science has known it was a myth for years but no one believes them.
